Our Student Voices

At Selly Oak, we feel it is important that our students know that their voice is important and that it can be an instrument to affect positive change in their school community. We do this via a range of student voice groups:

  • Student Voice Committees: Last year, approximately a third of the students as Selly Oak Trust School were part of committees ranging from Whole School Student Voice to Eco and Health & Safety Committees. Every term, our PSLs (Pastoral Support Leads - one attached to every year group) work with Well Being Councils to organise a ‘Well-being’, ‘Citizenship’ or ‘Cultural’ activity, designed to be enjoyed by the whole year group.

Last year, the ‘Student Voice’ achievements included:

  • Winning donations to fund a school set of bikes worth nearly £3000
  • Creating our Whole School Pledges
  • Surveying & revising our school uniform policy
  • The creation of nearly 30 new clubs run voluntarily by staff
  • Organising Charity events
  • Organising Year group trips
  • Student Voice Volunteers: Our students have an amazing desire to volunteer their free time in order to work together to make our school a better place for all. They do this by proudly wearing an orange high-visibility vest and performing roles such as ‘Peer support’, ‘Play Facilitators’, ‘Canteen Monitors’, ‘Litter Pickers’ and ‘SOLAR store Assistants’.
  • This year you can also see our 6th Form PREFECTS supporting our school community, hard to miss in their amazing GOLD HI-VIZ jackets!

We are very proud this year to be taking part in the UNICEF award to make our school a ‘Rights Respecting School’. To achieve this, we must raise everyone’s awareness of the work UNICEF do to champion the rights of children across the globe. Our aim is to unite the voices of students, parents and carers and staff in order to promote this message and embed the ethos of a ‘Rights respecting School’ at Selly Oak Trust School.
